A Reflection of You

Core Elements Studio Client Portrait

The design-build process is such a fulfilling experience, but the actual build is only half the story. The people involved are what really brings this creative endeavor to life.

The reflection of the client – sometimes both literally and figuratively – in the final product is immensely satisfying and inspiring.

The story of Sue and Josh’s table beautifully illustrates this dynamic.

Sue is a Montana fly fishing guide, outdoor enthusiast, podcast host, entrepreneur, former Peace Corp Volunteer turned Coast Guard Captain, and longtime advocate for wildlife conservation through her tenure with the federal government. She’s an impressive woman, to say the least!

I had the privilege of working with Sue through Sky Oro, a local women’s networking community, and gaining her wise insights on uncovering our authentic voices while telling our stories. As a small token of appreciation, I delivered a set of coasters I had made of reclaimed wood and blue resin that emulated the Montana waters she so dearly loves.

In true Sue fashion, she took that morsel of an idea and expanded it into the exploration of building a river table, utilizing the wood from her existing dining room table which was, when we met, unstable, wobbly and weak. But, this was not just any wood – it was ebony, a rare tropical hardwood. The table was made in Bali, purchased in Guam over 20 years ago, and had traveled with Sue during and after her Coast Guard career, which moved her across oceans and 6 U.S. States.

Granted, after all those years and movement through the varied regions and humidity levels, the table was in need of a little love. But, I must admit – if I had traveled that same path, I would be claiming the same!

Repurposing wood can be a nerve-wracking, yet deeply meaningful process. When working with reclaimed wood, you never know what you’ll find – both in organic structure and prior craftsmanship – when the dismantling begins.

However, repurposing wood that has been in the family for years can take on a whole new layer of complexity. It’s not just a process of preserving and stabilizing the structural integrity of the reclaimed wood. It also involves a painstaking process of protecting the sentimental value held by the client. Items repurposed from someone’s home hold not only great depth from the materials’ own organic history, but they can also carry decades of nostalgia and memories. This process of deconstruction takes time, care, patience, belief, trust, and love.

Once the slabs were disassembled, cleaned, stabilized with resin, and flattened – only then, did we really know what we had to work with. Because the slabs varied in width and structural integrity, we had restrictions. But oftentimes it’s through constraint that the most creative ideas emerge

For inspiration, Sue and Josh leaned into their experiences together, fishing along Big Sky Country’s rivers and exploring Montana’s great outdoors.

When we met, they offered up a mason jar full of mementos from their excursions – river rocks collected and crystals mined, each carrying its own memory of a journey shared.

Every piece told a story – prompting reminiscent, warm smiles as they recalled their various adventures.

We explored several design options, even considering mirroring a specific bend in the Missouri River, within which was nestled their favorite fishing hole and pelican viewing area. Ultimately, we settled on a design of two parallel streams.

Just like their own lives – two rivers running along life’s journey together, reflective of one another, yet leaving their own unique mark.

Not only did Sue and Josh influence the conceptual design, but they also participated in the actual build. They refined the curves of the newly carved stream beds, strategically placed the rocks, and helped pour the epoxy. And, we had fun collaborating on posting updates on social media.

Ebony wood is incredibly dense and, therefore, already very heavy. After adding rocks and epoxy resin for an expanded table width, we also decided to build a metal base to support the additional weight for years to come.

Overall – this build holds so many layers of meaning. It’s a literal representation of Montana’s landscape, as well as their fly fishing adventures, and even their involvement in the build itself.

It’s also an incredible figurative representation of their partnership, memories shared, as well as hope and belief in the steadiness and stability of their future together.

I admire Sue’s perspective on life. She maintains a strong dedication to not only lead a life filled with confidence, connection, and purpose, but she offers a commitment to help others do the same. She adamantly says yes to the next right answer and paves the way for others to discover their authentic voice.

Sue’s innate qualities are reflected in this build – strength, courage, resilience, depth, optimism, and adventure. I couldn’t be more grateful for the trust and partnership Sue and Josh offered throughout every stage of this inspiring and meaningful creation.

The People Behind the Piece

“This is more than a place for us to gather and break bread. It’s a loving reminder of our unique and individual pasts, of finding unexpected love and joining our lives together, and an invitation for us to continue to follow the flow of life as we move, like the river table, into our future together.

At Core Elements Studio, my mission is to build functional art for our personal spaces—pieces that are inspired by nature’s core elements and re-imagined with a creative twist. I draw on the deep resonance of earth, the magic in the moment of fire, the creative flow of water, the meaningful connection of wood, the strength and practice of metal, and the restorative breath of air to infuse every creation with both functional purpose and aesthetic beauty. —Dakota
